Review of Dog Years by Bruce Leperre for the Winnipeg Free Press - February 2006
Tom Wilson - Dog Years(True North) - The second solo project from Blackie and the Rodeo Kings' Tom Wilson moves effortlessly between psychedelic sixties style revelatory rave-ups, Fab Four pop, and contemplative mid-tempo blues- rock. Wilson's BARK mate Colin Linden handles production and stamps the whole affair with his bluesy guitar inflections at every turn.
Dog Years is a dream world where Keith Richards bounces guitar licks around joyously as Van Morrison and Mick Jagger fight for the dirty white soul crown of thorns. Norah Jones slow dances with Daniel Lanois while Tom Waits his turn and Lou Reed hooks up with S.E. Hinton.
Wilson's pen has an endless supply of black ink - I'm a pill poppin' burned up punk with a Joe Strummer heart and a head full of junk yet the instrument that delivers those dark words sounds like honey spread with a straight razor.
Special guests include Rosanne Cash, Richard Bell of The Band and bassists Gary Tallent of Springsteen's E Street Band and Johnny Cash alumnus Dave Roe.
Presenter Comments
"Tom on guitar/vox and Bob on harp/vox with Russell on hand-percs truly rocked their shack recordings and other heart-felt songs. They and their music is a Canadian gem. Their audiences will not be able to resist them after one live experience. Out of the shack and into the open. Thanks for turning me onto these guys and their music. What a blast. Truly!"
